The Donbass War, Four Years On
June 12, 2018
by Larry Towell
In February, 2018, Larry Towell travelled to Ukraine to witness the fourth anniversary of the Euromaidan uprising and memorials for the approximately 100 persons who died in the 2014 clashes.
From Kiev he travelled to the Donbass region in the east bordering the separatist republics of Donetsk and Luhansk where he found derelict Soviet summer camps for youth, abandoned coal mines surrounded by depopulating towns, and factories that had been destroyed by shelling in the early years of the war. The METIHBECT Metallurgical (steel) Factory in the port of Mariupol, once the largest of its kind in Europe, was operating at a fraction of its capacity due to difficulties in export.
